The Point Sur Lighthouse is situated at the peak of a 361-foot (110 m) rock at the head of Point Sur, 24.6 miles (39.6 km) south of Monterey, California, in the United States. The lighthouse can be accessed via Cabrillo Highway.
History
Established in 1889, the Point Sur Lighthouse has been an essential aid to navigation for over a century. It is part of Point Sur State Historic Park and continues to operate as a vital navigational aid.
Architecture
The lighthouse stands at 40 feet (12 m) tall and is situated on a rocky outcropping 270 feet (82 m) above sea level. The structure is made from local materials, including stone and wood.
Light Characteristics
The Point Sur Lighthouse emits a white light with a range of 25 nautical miles (46 km). The light's character is marked by the letter "Fl".
Current Status
As of 2016, the lighthouse remains in operation as an essential aid to navigation. It is not currently automated.
